About the Park
Near the foothills of the Himalayas is Rajaji National Park and Tiger Reserve spreads over three districts of Uttarakhand, namely Dehradun, Haridwar, and Pauri Garhwal. Located close to the city yet offering natural scenic beauty is one of the many attractions of Rajaji.
Rajaji National Park is also among the many tiger reserves of India. It is the second tiger reserve of the state after Jim Corbett National Park. Three wildlife sanctuaries, Chilla, Motichur, and Rajaji were merged into one in the year 1983 and named Rajaji National Park in honor of C.Rajagopalachari (Rajaji).
The National Park is spread over an area of 820.42 square kilometers. The Holy river Ganga flows through the National Park and it just adds to the charm and beauty of the wildlife population of Rajaji. Rajaji is famous for its elephant and tiger population. Being close to the city area, Rajaji is easily accessible and offers a pleasant feeling of getaway or recreation. A place to just forget all your worries and leap into the arms of nature, surrounded by several animals and plant species.
Flora of the Region
The range of flora between the Shivalik ranges and the Indo-Gangetic Plains are formed by riverine vegetation, scrublands, grasslands, broadleaved deciduous forests, and pine forests. The lush vegetation and dense jungles of this region are one of the reasons why a variety of wildlife populations inhabit this region. The varied topography of Rajaji also plays an important factor in the varied flora and fauna.
Fauna of the Region
Popular for its Elephant population, Rajaji National Park also inhabits several other animals and birds. The mountain goat, Goral, is also one of the most popular animals found in this park. Some of the many animals that are found here include Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephant, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Striped Hyena, Goral, Sloth Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer, Sambhar, Wild Boar, Monitor Lizard, Python, King Cobra, Indian langur, Indian Porcupine, Indian Hare, and Jackal among others.
Several migratory birds also visit this region. Some of these birds are Ruddy Shelduck, Mallard, Red Crested Pochard, Pintail, Tufted Duck, etc.

Jungle Safari: To enjoy the beauty of the lush forests, dense vegetation, and spectacular view of wild animals up close, the National Park has Jeep Safaris organized which allows the tourists to have the best experience in the wild. The jeep safari covers a specific track and the tourists are accompanied by a guide who will help them understand the park and the animals of the National Park.
Bird Watching: Make sure to grab your binoculars because the birds that visit this park are amazing! The park is home to several species of migratory birds. Make sure you don’t visit the park without your binoculars as there will be some extraordinary sightings for you there!
