About Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated at Pandarkawada Tehsil, Yavatmal of Maharashtra is the Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary covers an area of approximately 149 square kilometers. This is a perfect place for wildlife enthusiasts to witness various beautiful species of wildlife that can be found here.

Surrounded by hilly-undulating territory, Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is not very popular among the people and so not many people travel to this Wildlife Sanctuary. There are several villages situated in the vicinity of this sanctuary, and the population of those villages depends on Tipeshwar Sanctuary for natural resources. 

Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary was named after ‘Goddess Tipai’, sighted near the Tipeshwar village in the sanctuary area. This reserve is a rich wildlife and biodiversity area.

Several rivers such as Bhima, Tapti, Krishna, and Purna are responsible for irrigating the fields of this sanctuary from various angles. The atmosphere of the region remains pleasant throughout the year and the reserve is also referred to as the ‘Green Oasis’ of Southern Maharashtra. 

 

Flora and Fauna

The area has a rich and diverse population of plants and animals. The majority of the sanctuary exists as Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests. Some prominent herbs found in the region include Tarot, Tarwar, Wight, Waghori, Gokru, etc.

Many Wildlife Species including several endangered and endemic species are residents of the sanctuary. These species include Tigers, Panthers, Blackbucks, Small Indian Civet Cat, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Pangolin, Four Horned Antelope, Indian Cobra, Rat snakes, Russell\’s Viper, and Common Monitor Lizard along with various other species of animals.

There are also about 180 species of birds that can be found in this region which include 10 species of migratory birds and 9 species of endangered birds. 

 

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the sanctuary is after the season of monsoon, between October and February. The lush vegetation adds to the beauty of the fauna throughout the year.

How to Reach

There are 3 ways one could reach the Sanctuary: 

By road- Various cities have roads that go up to the sanctuary. This long drive can be a great recreational activity along with a visit to the sanctuary. 

By Train: The nearest railway station to this sanctuary is Amreli and Badnera, which is 165 km away. 

By Flight: The nearest airport is the Nagpur Airport which is at a distance of 170 km from the Sanctuary.
